I was there when Kyogle marched for Reconciliation on 28 May 2000. There were people everywhere, a real buzz, young and old.
The biggest impact on me was listening to Elder Uncle Michael Walker, with tears in his eyes, telling how he was a proud Bundjalung man, how happy he was that we were all together that day and how it hurt him deeply that his people had been repeatedly labelled uncivilised.
He told us Aboriginal people had their own lore, languages, religion, education and this was all taken from them and that made him very sad. He was so happy to see us all walking together and hoped we would continue coming together.
The Kyogle Reconciliation Group hosts a Reconciliation March each year, usually between May and July.
